I sometimes thought my father thought he could't die while he still had books on his pending pile (a stab at immortality I seem to be replicating)... so, it was strangely touching to see Tom Gauld has had similar thoughts.

@Uair @bookstodon I think fantasy and sci-fi should be their own sections in bookstores and not grouped with anything. It annoys me that they're on the same shelves. Sci-fi and fantasy are split up in online bookstores. Mystery and horror also need to stay separate.

@riggbeck @bookstodon I read that when I was young and I'm sure all the social commentary was over my head. That would be a good one to revisit!

Can you name a film that was adapted not from a novel, but from a short story?
Here's one:

The Illusionist (2006)

@isaactly_s @bookstodon China Mieville is someone I haven't read who I'd like to try, thanks for the recommendation! I'll try Perdido Street Station, I just read the blurb and it sounds great!

@tkinias @bookstodon I read those last year and loved them. It was such a unique concept! I don't mind some military adjacent stories, just not books that are totally set on military ships and the focus is on war stories. Like I tried Scalzi's Old Man's War and couldn't really get into it.

@h2lift @bookstodon ooh thanks, I'll definitely take a look!

@todwest @bookstodon agree that the future is pretty terrifying. If you liked the Clarke books, you might like the Expanse series. It's set about 200 years in the future and people have colonized the solar system. It's an epic nine book series that's honestly the best sci-fi I've ever read. It's not an idealist future, it's pretty realistic and mostly character based and I guess that's why I like it.

Jennifer,

@MythingPerson @bookstodon Murderbot is one of my all-time favorite fictional characters! I read this great keynote Martha Wells gave about the series. https://marthawells.dreamwidth.org/649804.html

@jens @todwest @bookstodon exactly. The TV show is VERY different from the books as far as characters. There is zero conflict within the Rocinante crew for one thing, I found that super annoying on the show. I thought the TV show was ok but the books are sooooooo much better. I haven't read Jack Reacher, I thought it might be too violent but I liked the first season of the TV show. I like historic fiction too, I'll check those out. A series I really like is Maisie Dobbs, set in post WWI era.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@jens @todwest @bookstodon I watched the whole series and mostly enjoyed it, but I'd already read the books and kept having to explain things to my husband 😆 I will say the actor who played Amos was spot on, and later on there's a mashup of Drummer and Michio Pa and she's great too. I like the book series so much I have all the books and also all the audiobooks. The narrator is fabulous.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@jens @todwest @bookstodon I really wanted to see what they did with Amos at the end of the last book!! You know what, lol. Sadly it ended with book 6.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@jens @todwest @bookstodon I had some issues with Holden's ending, but overall agree. And loved the ending for Amos. Did you read the novella Sins of our Fathers? I was kinda annoyed book 9 didn't wrap up one storyline so the novella satisfied that. My favorite novella was Strange Dogs 😳😬

World Central Kitchen founder's response

“The air strikes on our convoy were not just some unfortunate mistake in the fog of war. It was a direct attack on clearly marked vehicles whose movements were known by the [Israeli military]. It was also the direct result of his [PM Netanyahu’s] government’s policy to squeeze humanitarian aid to desperate levels.”

@marcroberts @ChrisMayLA6 @Henrysbridge @bookstodon the actor who plays Amos doesn't look anything like the character I see in my head when I read the books, but he's absolutely perfect. He totally gets Amos. Although the TV series doesn't do the last three books ☹️
